Visiting Disneyland Paris for the first time is a magical experience… but it can also be overwhelming. Enthusiasm, lack of planning and some very widespread myths lead many visitors to make mistakes that cost them time, money and — above all — rides they never get to enjoy.
After many visits to the park, we’ve compiled the most common slip-ups first-timers make. Take note: every single one of these mistakes has a solution, and if you avoid them, your trip will be far more relaxed and you’ll make the most of every minute inside the park.
📅 1. Choosing the Wrong Day to Visit
Not every Tuesday is quiet, and not every Saturday is a nightmare.
There are specific factors that send crowd levels through the roof:
- European school holidays
- French bank holidays
- Special events
- Halloween and Christmas seasons
💡 PRO tip: check crowd calendars and predictions before buying your tickets. Picking the right day can completely transform your experience.
👋 2. Not Booking Airport Transfers in Advance
Arriving at Charles de Gaulle or Orly and thinking “I’ll figure out how to get to the hotel later” can be expensive. The Magical Shuttle runs on fixed schedules and taxis or Uber can surge in price at peak times.
The solution: book your transport in advance — whether the RER train, the Magical Shuttle or a private transfer — to avoid starting your trip stressed and over budget.
🎯 3. Not Planning Your Day Before You Arrive
One of the biggest mistakes is thinking “we’ll just wing it when we get there”. Many people believe Disneyland Paris is like a local fairground where you simply walk up to whatever you fancy. Wrong. Disneyland Paris has two parks, dozens of shows and distances that are deceptively long.
Arriving without a plan usually results in:
- Wandering aimlessly
- Queuing unnecessarily
- Missing key attractions
- Ending the day with the feeling that there wasn’t enough time
💡 Expert tip: decide at home which attractions are your priorities and the rough order you want to tackle them in.
📊 Plan your day with real data, not guesswork.
Magic Wait Paris shows you wait time predictions attraction by attraction so you can organise your visit intelligently and save hours of queuing.
📲 4. Not Using a Tool to Track Wait Times
This is, without doubt, the most repeated mistake.
Many visitors only check wait times once they’re already inside the park… and by then it’s too late to react.
With Magic Wait Paris you can:
✅ Check queue predictions before your trip
✅ Know which attractions to do first each day
✅ Avoid the wait time peaks
✅ Adjust your route in real time
Instead of queuing for 70 minutes, you could do it in 20 simply by changing the order of attractions. Visitors who plan ahead typically enjoy 3 or 4 extra rides per day without rushing or stressing.
🎢 5. Trying to Buy Tickets at the Gate
This is a classic mistake that many people still make. For the past few years, Disneyland Paris no longer sells tickets at the park turnstiles. Everything must be done online with a pre-booked date.
Online tickets can be cancelled up to three days before, so there is no excuse for not buying in advance. Nothing is more frustrating than arriving at the entrance only to be turned away because capacity is full or your booking isn’t confirmed.
⏰ 6. Arriving at the Park Late
The first hour of the day is pure gold. If you’re staying at a Disney hotel, you have the privilege of Extra Magic Time, which lets you into the park one hour before the general public. Many guests make the mistake of sleeping in or having a leisurely breakfast while the park is practically empty.
Ideal attractions to make the most of the first hour:
- Big Thunder Mountain
- Peter Pan’s Flight
- Star Wars Hyperspace Mountain
- Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast
💡 Arriving 30–45 minutes before the official opening time can completely change your day.
👃 7. Buying Water Bottles Inside the Park
Paying over €4 for a bottle of water every time you’re thirsty is a waste of money. Disneyland Paris has drinking water fountains throughout the park, near almost every set of toilets.
Expert tip: bring a reusable bottle from home and refill it throughout the day. You’ll save a fortune and help the environment at the same time.
👸 8. Wasting Your Morning Hours on Character Meet-and-Greets
Meeting Mickey or the Princesses is wonderful, but the photo queues can eat up 2 hours of your most productive morning time. Those early hours are for the attractions that will have massive waits later, like Crush’s Coaster or Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure.
🎢 When is the best time to do each attraction?
Check the predictions from Magic Wait Paris and find out at what point in the day each attraction has the shortest wait. Organise your morning like a pro.
Tip: if character photos are a priority, consider booking a “Character Dining” meal to optimise your time — you eat and meet the characters at the same time.
🍽️ 9. Not Booking Restaurants in Advance
If you think you can walk into Captain Jack’s or Bistrot Chez Rémy without a reservation, you’re in for a big disappointment. Table-service restaurants fill up weeks — sometimes months — in advance.
The most popular ones that book up fastest:
- Bistrot Chez Rémy
- Captain Jack’s
- Walt’s
- PYM Kitchen
💡 Expert tip: book your meals as soon as you confirm your hotel reservation, or at least several days in advance. If you prefer fast food, eat outside the typical meal windows (before 12:00 or after 15:00).
Many visitors also queue physically at quick-service restaurants without knowing the Mobile Food Order exists in the official app. You can order your food from your phone while you’re in a ride queue and simply pick it up when you’re done.
🗺️ 10. Trying to Do EVERYTHING in One Day
Spoiler: it’s not possible.
Disneyland Paris is designed so that there are always things left to see — and that’s part of the magic. Trying to do it all in one day only causes stress, endless walking and a lower-quality experience overall.
Bear in mind that there are two parks. Many first-timers think the second park is “small” and can be done quickly. With the opening of World of Frozen and attractions like Ratatouille or Tower of Terror, this park requires nearly a full day if you want to truly enjoy it. Don’t leave it for the last two hours of the day.
👉 The key is to prioritise: choose your must-dos and enjoy the atmosphere without constantly watching the clock.
🌧️ 11. Not Checking the Weather (or Adapting Your Strategy)
The climate in Marne-la-Vallée is extremely changeable. We’ve seen hundreds of people buying €12 plastic ponchos from the park shops because they didn’t check the forecast before leaving.
A Paris shower can last 10 minutes or an entire day. Going without comfortable, waterproof footwear, or without enough layers of clothing, can mean your day ends at 5pm through sheer cold and exhaustion.
But there’s an equally common mistake: checking the forecast without adapting your strategy. Rain often empties certain areas of the park and unexpectedly cuts queue times.
💡 Grey days can become great opportunities if you react quickly and check wait times in real time.
🎆 12. Not Planning the End of the Day
Another classic mistake: improvising where to watch the night show.
If you want to see Disney Illuminations or the Electrical Sky Parade (the drone show) from the front, you cannot arrive 5 minutes before. People start claiming their spots up to an hour ahead. If you arrive late, all you’ll see is heads and phone screens in front of you, missing much of the magic of the castle projections.
Find your spot 30 to 60 minutes before if you want a clear view. Position yourself centred in front of the castle, but not too close to the smoke screen.
And when it comes to leaving, the most typical mistake is trying to exit alongside the entire crowd. The experienced visitors wait a few minutes inside. Letting the majority push ahead means that in many cases you’ll actually get out faster by leaving 10 minutes later than by trying to be first out the gate.
Extra PRO tip: use that moment to take photos of the castle with almost nobody in the shot. Magic without the crowds.
✨ The Magic Lies in Smart Planning
Most mistakes at Disneyland Paris have nothing to do with the park itself… they come down to a lack of preparation.
You don’t need to be an expert to have an incredible day. You just need to:
✅ Plan a little before you arrive
✅ Prioritise the attractions that really matter to you
✅ Get ahead of the queues using smart tools
✅ Book restaurants and transport in advance
And if there’s one piece of advice that sums up all the others, it’s this:
Don’t arrive at Disneyland Paris without knowing what you’re going to do first.
Your future self — the one who leaves the park having ridden everything they wanted — will thank you.
